Green Star Certification Services
What is Green Star?
Green Star is a sustainability rating for buildings, fitouts and communities that judges how sustainably a project is designed, constructed and operated. It administered by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), which conducts independent assessments of each site.
GreenStar ratings cover everything from solar to building materials to reflect an organisation’s commitment to reducing environmental impact, enhancing occupant wellbeing and creating healthier, more efficient spaces. They apply to many different projects including office buildings and large-scale community precincts.
Green star certifications differ from NABERS as they do not reflect a building’s utility data. Rather, they are an assessment of sustainability practices in that building’s design, construction and operation.
Why Get a GreenStar Rating?
Your Green Star accreditation is recognised nationally and may even be a requirement for some public and private sector projects. With a rating, you are able to:
Demonstrate environmental leadership to government, investors and tenants
Enhance market value – certified buildings typically attract higher rents and greater long-term value
Support ESG goals, which is an increasingly important factor for institutional investors and compliance reporting
Improve health and wellbeing of building occupants
Reduce environmental impact through lower energy and water use, improved materials selection and waste reduction
Meet government or planning requirements – as the system has grown, many local and state government projects have specified minimum Green Star ratings
What Does GreenStar Assess?
There are multiple Green Star rating tools, each assessing different site and project types. A tool may consider any of the following categories:
Category | Focus Areas |
---|---|
Energy | Building efficiency, renewable energy and emissions reduction |
Water | Water use and water-sensitive designs |
Materials | Sustainable sourcing, waste reduction and life-cycle impact |
Indoor Environment Quality | Air quality, lighting, acoustics and thermal comfort |
Transport | Access to public transport and support for cycling and low-emission vehicles |
Land Use & Ecology | Biodiversity, site selection and ecological value |
Emissions | Air emissions, light pollution and storm water |
Innovation | Demonstrating sustainability leadership beyond standard benchmarks |
A Green Star certification is expressed as a rating out of 6 stars, reflecting the project’s level of achievement:
Rating Level | Meaning |
---|---|
1-3 Stars | Minimum practice |
4 Stars | Best practice |
5 Stars | Australian excellence |
6 Stars | World leadership |
How Green Star Certification Works
Your building does not need a Green Star rating – the process is entirely voluntary. Without it however, you will not receive the benefits mentioned above.
To get an accreditation, you should work with an accredited Green Star Accredited Professional (GSAP) – consultants with experience managing Green Star submissions. They will guide you from design through to construction and operation.
Follow these steps to attain your certification:
- Select the rating tool relevant to the project
- Engage a GSAP or consultant to support the process and documentation
- Document and submit evidence for each credit the project is targeting
- GBCA independently reviews the submission and awards the rating
Once achieved, the Green Star rating can be used in project promotion, leasing and ESG reporting.
