COMMERCIAL DRINKING WATER TESTING IN PERTH

Commercial drinking water requirements

Drinking water, also known as ‘potable water’, is water that meets the following criteria:

    • It can be consumed

    • It can be used for washing or cooking

    • It is free from harmful pathogens

    • It contains no harmful chemicals

    • it has a desirable taste, colour and odour

Mine Managers, Exploration Managers, and Exploration Contractors registered with the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection have a duty of care to demonstrate the provision of safe drinking water. This means that drinking water must be tested and monitored.

The frequency and type of water monitoring required for a camp is set out by the Department of Health (DoH) ‘Minesites and Exploration Camps Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Requirements’. This takes into account whether:

    • Substances in contact with the drinking water meet Australian Standards AS 4020;

    • Back flow prevention systems are incorporated into the drinking water system.

    • Air breaks and storage prior to reticulation and consumption

    • Drinking water is carted or tanked

    • The minesite or camp uses self-managed water extraction.

Commercial drinking water testing with ENVSS

Environmental Site Services provide water testing to mine sites and remote camps. We also provide microbial and chemical laboratory analysis compliant with the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) requirements.

ENVSS’ testing ensures that commercial drinking water meets DoH standards, as well as the requirements set out by the National Health and Medical Research Council in its ‘Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality in Australia 2011’.

Our commercial drinking water testing goes beyond ensuring your site is compliant with regulations. We also offer management plans for drinking water (in accordance with DoH), chemical drinking water treatments and water quality assurance.

ENVSS can also help establish monitoring programs on your site. These programs are designed in accordance with the DoH “Systems Compliance and Routine Reporting Requirements for Minesites and Exploration Camps” and “Small Community Sampling Grid”

How we conduct commercial drinking water testing

ENVSS carries out two types of tests when analysing commercial drinking water:

Chemical Quality Testing

Chemical quality testing looks for a range of chemical elements and compounds. This includes heavy metals that may pose a risk to your health and other elements that only affect the taste, odour or appearance of the water.

Microbiological Testing

Microbiological testing is the identification of total coliforms and faecal coliforms in drinking water. The total coliform test will show the total bacterial loading found in the water sample. The faecal coliform test will indicate the level of faecal contamination in the water and how safe the water is to drink.
