DUST AND AMBIENT AIR MONITORING SYSTEMS

Regulatory compliance is an ever-looming issue for industries that generate significant dust. To assist in proving your compliance and protecting public health, Environmental Site Services provides real time ambient air quality and dust monitoring.

Our WA built monitoring stations utilise market leading technology such as Dust Deposition Gauges and BAMs, measuring contaminants ranging from diesel particulate matter to PM2.5.

All ENVSS systems are designed in line with the National Environment Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure (NEPM), keeping your operation running smoothly and safely.

What is Required For Dust Monitoring Compliance in Western Australia?

In WA, dust generating industries (such as construction, mining and manufacturing) are subject to strict regulations. The most prominent standard is the NEPM, which sets frameworks to keep dust emissions within established limits.

As per the NEPM, your responsibility involves ongoing monitoring of dust levels at your site, implementing effective dust control measures and ensuring all activities are compliant with the legal requirements.

Because the NEPM works in tandem with local government regulations, it is important to engage an environmental consultant and ensure that you are satisfying all relevant requirements. At ENVSS, our team is equipped to guide and support you in these tasks, providing the necessary tools and expertise to ensure your operations remain compliant and environmentally responsible.

Our Systems

At ENVSS, we create and deploy dust monitoring systems using market leading sensors and reporting software. These systems are capable of both long-term and short-term monitoring, tailored to the specific conditions of each site to provide precise and reliable data.

Our dust monitoring stations are built in-house and are designed to send SMS and email alerts. Monitoring data is pushed to our secure server, or can be viewed/accessed on our remote monitoring data portal. This real time data allows for timely adjustments to your management practices, ensuring that your compliance is seamless and well-documented for easy reporting.

We utilise technology such as:

Units are solar powered with a deep cell battery bank, to allow these sensors to run for up to 10 days during inclement weather.

These dust monitors can be combined with other monitoring sensors including:

  • Type 1 Noise Loggers

  • Triaxial Vibration Loggers

  • Meteorological Sensors

What Does ENVSS Monitor?

Your compliance could be affected by the presence of contaminants like diesel particulate matter and volatile organic compounds. Our capabilites allow us to monitor these and other more intricate contaminants, such as:

PM2.5

Particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or smaller is known as PM2.5. It consists of tiny particles that can easily be inhaled deep into the lungs and possibly enter the bloodstream. PM2.5 exposure can contribute to diseases and potentially impact lung development in children.

For PM2.5, the NEPM sets an exposure standard of 25 µg/m³ (averaged over a 24-hour period). ENVSS can accurately measure PM2.5 levels, ensuring that your operations comply with these standards and protect public health.

PM10

Similar to PM2.5, particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometres or less is knows as PM10. These are particles small enough to be inhaled into the nose or mouth but too large to reach the deepest parts of the lungs. Exposure to PM10 can cause issues including aggravated asthma and painful breathing, particularly in vulnerable populations.

NEPM standards for PM10 require that concentrations do not exceed 50 µg/m³ (averaged over a 24-hour period). Our dust monitoring services help manage PM10 levels, ensuring a safer environment and compliance with NEPM requirements.

TSP (Total Suspended Particulates)

Total Suspended Particulates represents all particles suspended in air, regardless of their size. This measurement assesses the total impact of particulate matter in a certain area, whether it be visibility, deposits on surfaces or physical irritation.

There are no specific standards for TSP, but activities that generate it must comply with wider environmental regulations. ENVSS can assist you in understanding these requirements and implementing a suitable solution.

Nuisance Dust

Nuisance dust refers to larger particulate matter that, although not regulated as strictly as PM10 or PM2.5, can still cause significant health impacts. It primarily includes dust from roads, construction sites and similar sources – those that cause irritation and reduce visibility.

Nuisance dust is typically managed through local government regulations and site-specific requirements. As with TSP, ENVSS can help you in locating and understanding these laws and creating an effective dusty monitoring system.
