Why is Asbestos Testing Important?

Asbestos analysis by a NATA-accredited laboratory, accredited for test method AS 4964 ‘Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples’ is typically the default method for determining the presence of asbestos in a bulk sample under WHS legislation.  

Exposure to asbestos can cause serious health issues, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. With testing being the only accepted method for determining the presence of asbestos in a bulk sample and is a vital step in the management of asbestos risk including but not limited to;

  • Minimising potential exposure to the general public, workers and contractors who work in, access, or provide service to buildings;
  • Assist with due diligence on property purchases, refurbishments and/or demolition;
  • Meeting legislative compliance for asbestos being identified at a workplace; and
  • Minimise the ongoing costs of managing assumed asbestos materials.

How does ENVSS carry out asbestos testing?

ENVSS can facilitate asbestos analysis from ‘over the counter (OTC)’ sample drop offs, through to comprehensive site surveys and sampling programs.

For OTC asbestos testing services, ENVSS will arrange:

  1. Chain of Custody: Our team, will accept sample(s)*, allocate a unique identifier and generate a chain of custody form using information obtained from the client inclusive of: name, address, specific sample location, material type.
    *samples should be sealed within a container, or double bagged using heavy-duty plastic (200 µm thickness polyethylene) bags, and appropriately labelled.
  2. Analysis: Samples are transferred to a NATA-accredited laboratory where they undergo detailed analysis using polarised-light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining (DS) in accordance with  AS 4964 ‘Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples’ 
  3. Reporting: A certificate of analysis (COA) will be provided. The COA will include detail relating to testing methodologies, the results of testing. 

For comprehensives surveys, an ENVSS consultant will also undertake; desktop review, site inspection, and develop a detailed report of findings.

Can I collect my own sample?

While it is always recommended to have sampling undertaken by a suitably qualified person due to the potential health risks associated with the collection process. If it is within an individuals scope of competence, WorkSafe Code of practice: How to manage and control asbestos in the workplace provides a sampling process outline the steps that should be undertaken.

No, WHS legislation dictates that a sample must only be analysed by a ‘NATA-accredited laboratory accredited for the relevant test method’.

Asbestos was widely used in the construction of residential, commercial and industrial buildings up until circa 1990 before being totally banned in 2003.

While testing is not mandatory, If a material is assumed to contain asbestos, then the material must be either managed as, or removed as an asbestos material until testing proves it does not contain asbestos.
